# Connect ChatGPT or Cursor to Occam

> **Coming soon.** Occam's AI connection is not open yet. This page describes how it will work, and access opens soon. Until then the Occam MCP server and REST API at `mcp.occam.co` do not answer, and the setup steps below cannot be completed yet.

Occam's MCP server works in any app that supports remote MCP servers over Streamable HTTP. This page covers ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code and other apps. For Claude, see [Connect Claude to Occam](https://app.occam.co/docs/ai/connect-claude-to-occam.md).

Occam's MCP link will be `https://mcp.occam.co/mcp` once access opens (coming soon; it does not answer yet). Through it, your AI app can read Occam's metric catalogue, check and simulate algorithms, and create or publish them in your account with the permissions you give. It cannot trade, sign transactions or move funds.

## ChatGPT

Needs a Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu plan. On a workspace plan, an admin may need to add it first.

1. Open ChatGPT Plugins in a browser at https://chatgpt.com/plugins.
2. Click +, then Add custom MCP server.
3. Name it Occam, paste `https://mcp.occam.co/mcp` as the server URL and choose OAuth.
4. Tick I understand and want to continue, then click Create as a plugin.
5. Install the Occam plugin and approve on the Occam page that opens. Choose the permissions there: simulate, create, publish. Read is always on.
6. In a new chat, type @ and pick Occam.

## Cursor

With OAuth: open Settings, AI Integrations in the Occam app (coming soon), pick Cursor, click Add to Cursor, then Install in Cursor. When Cursor asks you to log in to `occam`, click it and approve on the Occam page.

With an API key:

1. Create a key at Settings, AI Integrations and add `export OCCAM_API_KEY="..."` to `~/.zshrc` or `~/.bashrc`. Quit and reopen Cursor so it picks up the variable.
2. Save this as `~/.cursor/mcp.json`, or `.cursor/mcp.json` in a project:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "occam": {
      "url": "https://mcp.occam.co/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ${env:OCCAM_API_KEY}" }
    }
  }
}
```

3. Open Cursor Settings, then MCP, and check that occam lists its tools.

## VS Code (GitHub Copilot)

On Copilot Business and Enterprise, an admin turns on MCP servers first. Save this as `.vscode/mcp.json`; VS Code asks for the key in a password prompt and keeps it in its secret storage:

```json
{
  "inputs": [
    { "type": "promptString", "id": "occam-api-key", "description": "Occam API key", "password": true }
  ],
  "servers": {
    "occam": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.occam.co/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ${input:occam-api-key}" }
    }
  }
}
```

Start the occam server from the file, then open Copilot Chat in agent mode and pick the Occam tools. You can also leave out `inputs` and `headers` and sign in with OAuth when VS Code asks.

## Other apps

Add a remote MCP server with `https://mcp.occam.co/mcp`. If the app asks for a type, pick HTTP or Streamable HTTP. Sign in with OAuth when asked, or send an API key as `Authorization: Bearer <key>` from the app's secret storage. Apps Occam has not checked, such as Grok, can explore metrics and run simulations; to create or publish, use Claude, ChatGPT or an API key.

## Keep keys safe

A key is shown once. Keep it in a password manager or your app's secret storage, never in a chat, a command, a URL or a committed file. Keys expire after the 1 to 90 days you pick and can be revoked at any time at Settings, AI Integrations.
